It's hard to imagine that it has only been a year since Gus Presents launched Boy Bar at The Cafe every Friday night, reinvigorating the go-go boy scene in the Castro. A go-go renaissance, we call it.
By the third week, Kevin started to bring his camera, snapping four pics that night. Since then, he's become known for the pictures, sometimes taking well over a hundred a night. Some fun stats about the pictures he's taken....
- Boy Bar - 2,692 (not just go-go boys, but a lot are)
- The Cafe - 2,797 (mostly Boy Bar but also just hanging out after work)
- Gus Presents - 2,776 (most Boy Bar but also Frathouse on Wednesdays at 440 Castro)
- Go-Go Boys - 3,402 (not just Boy Bar, but a huge percentage are)
Over the year, Kevin has gotten to know quite a lot of the dancers (although he hasn't been 100% reliable about tagging their pictures with their names)...

These are just a fraction of the boys Kevin has photographed. In many cases, he didn't know the names of others to tag them, or didn't have the time to go through sets to tag individually by person. Anyway, we want to thank Gus for reviving go-go dancing in the Castro and introducing us to so many, several of whom have crashed overnight at the BGFH (Andy), or who have been to BGFH events (like Andrew, Joey C., Michael, and Luca -- the latter two have even stripped at Girl Drink Drunk!).
(Since we mentioned stats, we should add that since January 2006, Kevin has uploaded 12,830 photos that have collectively received 231,933 page views. Pretty damn productive 18 months!)
As an ex-New Yorker accustomed to go-go boys being in almost EVERY bar, I've always been bummed by the lack of them in SF - I actually think SF is freakish in this way, I mean every other city with a big gay community has them. Kudos to the Cafe and Gus for giving us a small taste of what other cities have in abundance!! What the hell is wrong with San francisco gay men?? Are they all so PC that they think strippers are demeaning or something?? Gimme a break!
