We've blogged before about Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS' annual fundraiser called Broadway Bares. The organization is a marriage between Equity Fights AIDS, founded in 1987, and Broadway Cares, founded in 1988, who merged in 1992. They work to help raise money for uninsured Broadway actors and dancers suffering from HIV and AIDS.
In 1992, actor / dancer / choreographer Jerry Mitchell organized the first Broadway Bares fundraiser at Splash Bar New York (SBNY)in which a handful of chorus boys go-go performed choreographed strip shows with their tips going to BC/EFA. Over the years, it's grown to be an enormous production, raising millions for people with AIDS as well as other health programs for the uninsured members of Broadway's community. Each year's performance centers around a common theme like Alice in Wonderland, Super Heroes, or Science Fiction.
We love Broadway Bares because it features some of our favorite things: boys stripping, choreographed performances, and raising money for charity. We won't belabor the history too much; you can read more at our October 9, 2009 post. But we wanted to make sure you knew that Broadway Bares' 20th anniversary is coming up this coming Sunday:
