In February of 2006, I created an account on Flickr as a way to share my photos from our first major party, the Epiphany Party. I created two sets, one for tamer ones and one for the more risque ones. (The photo to the right, from our Balls Out Ball in April of 2006, is my most popular photo on Flickr with over 20,000 page views.)
Initially, my Flickr photos were just going to cover events at the Big Gay Frat House. But then I started to take my camera to other functions and fundraisers, and then whenever I would go out and about. It became an unofficial photographic documentary of San Francisco's gay nightlife.
Four and a half years later, and my Flickr photos have surpassed the 50,000 mark. Each one is placed in at least one set, usually to mark the night or the event. In addition, they're tagged with as much information as I can -- the name of the event, the name of the venue, the name of the city, and sometimes even the name of the neighborhood. If I can (though this is even more painstaking), I often tag individual people's names or the type of people in it (like drag queens or go-go boys) or the type of action occurring (like strip poker or vacations).
Over the next few days, I'll be rolling out blog posts dedicated to my top 20 favorite types of photos that I've taken. Not individual photos (can you imagine how long it would take to cull through 50,000 photos), but types of photos. Some will be from one specific event. Some may be a recurring event, or type of event. And some will be types of activities. The won't be chosen by volume, but rather by my own personal interests.
But if you're interested in volume, here are my most commonly used tags on Flickr. Note: Flickr requires users to restrict nudity and risque photos so that children and the squeamish don't accidentally stumble across them inappropriately. To see the restricted ones, create a free Flickr account and then turn off SafeSearch in your account settings.
