We're so excited for our friends' new club event, Wet and Wild, which premiers tonight at Club 8 (1151 Folsom Street, San Francisco).
Our friend Phillip, who was our primary contact in the Sigma Epsilon Omega gay fraternity for whom we threw the Frat House for the Holidays fundraiser, was recently hired by Club 8 to be their events and marketing manager. In addition to managing some of their longtime events like Club Dragon (targeting Asian gays and their admirers), his role was to work on creating new events and working to bring in event promoters. One of his first coups was to work with club promoter Joshua J to revive Big Top at Club 8. (Big Top had a successful run at The Transfer, but put the event on hiatus when the bar closed for remodeling and returned as the Bar on Church.)
Several months ago, Phillip and I were chatting about the state of nightlife in the City. We kicked around different ideas for a new club night he could do with some new club promoters he was going to meet with (hi Nolan!). One of the many ideas was the thought of a "shower booth" for the go-go boys, similar to SBNY's (formerly Splash Bar New York). To our knowledge, no one in San Francisco has quite done that, at least not in awhile. The Cafe was talking about creating a go-go shower during their remodeling, but those plans were abandoned at some point. And around Pride, LookOut created a make-shift shower for shower dancers, but it was only used once for a special event. No one before that we know of has actually created a permanent standing shower for the go-go boys to perform in.
Another issue Phillip faced was trying to get guys to leave the Castro and head all the way down to Folsom Street for an event -- especially guys who might not be into the usual denim-and-leather scene at most of the SOMA bars. I reminded him that a now-closed event at Truck, called Poser, had rented a limo to do a shuttle service between their bar and the Castro. My initial suggestion was for him to coordinate with other SOMA bars to have a shuttle run from the Castro and then go throughout SOMA.
After meeting with his club promoters, Phillip reported back that a new event incorporating some of the ideas we talked about would premiere in November: Wet and Wild!
This event has so many awesome elements! I haven't been this excited about a new club since ... well, since Big Top returned, actually.
- No cover and 2-for-1 cocktails before 10:00. ($5 cover after 10:00.)
- Free limo service from the Castro starting at 10:00 (pick up at the Bank of America building)
- Shower stalls for go-go dancers
- A drag hostess, Lady TaTas, who will be making her debut performance and also premiering her music video
- Performance by Charisma Glitterati, who just stepped down as the reigning Miss Gay SF.
- Gust deejays, including the extraordinary Juanita MORE!
- Two stories of fun (Club 8 is built in what used to be a Victorian house.)
The photoshoot for Wet and Wild produced some amazing publicity photos. And for one brief moment, I was almost the photographer. Phillip texted me one day to tell me that their photographer had dropped out and they needed a replacement. Unfortunately, I had a conflict, but had I known how steamy the shoot would be, I would have cancelled almost anything to have done it. In any event, here are a few of their publicity photos. Hope to see you at Club 8 tonight.
If you miss it, you'll have to wait a whole month for the next one, as Wet and Wild will only be on the third Saturday of every month.
